Although the fashion industry developed first in Europe and America, today it is an international and highly globalized industry, with clothing often designed in one country, manufactured in another, and sold in a third. The four major current fashion capitals are acknowledged to be New York City (Manhattan), Paris, Milan, and London, which are all headquarters to the most significant fashion companies and are renowned for their major influence on global fashion. But there now also: Chinese Fashion, India Fashion Japanese Fashion, Middle East fashion and African Fashion.
Fashion is a term used interchangeably to describe the creation of clothing, footwear, accessories, cosmetics, and jewellery of different cultural aesthetics and their mix and match into outfits that depict distinctive ways of dressing (styles and trends) as signifiers of social status, self-expression, and group belonging. As a multifaceted term, fashion describes an industry, styles, aesthetics, and trends. The fashion industry consists of four levels:
Some observers distinguish between the fashion industry which makes “high fashion” and the apparel industry which makes ordinary clothes or “mass fashion”. However, since the 1970s the boundaries between them have blurred. Fashion is best defined as the style or styles of clothing and accessories worn at any given time by groups of people.
